Twitter Lesson 3 Customization

Twitter Customization is more challenging with two versions and maybe more of twitter. The old has been around for a while with a sign saying it is going away but hasn’t. They had a survey come up one time to ask why I had not switched. Does this mean they may change the new Twitter to a newer Twitter. I bring all this up because as you make your choices, if you still have a choice of old and new, see how it looks in both.

For myself, I just took a image and let it tile the space. For others they have made this a huge layout with business name and twitter and Facebook names so that it is a Marketing tool. Some have realized the new Twitter takes up a lot more space and put a thin vertical on the left.

Set up Profile

  1. First setup up your profile.
  2. Short bio and a link to your website(s) can fit in the 160 characters allowed.
  3. Make sure you have a website link or some link letting people know more about you. If that is a Facebook page or Facebook Business page, people can trust you more if they have more information about you.
  4. Upload a picture that represents you. This picture may or may not be your face. Some privacy sometimes is nice. Not everyone on the Internet is Trustworthy.

Background

Let’s cover your choices from simple to more fun or challenging depending on how you look at things creative. The important thing is get tweeting.

- Background color and sidebar

  1. Go to settings in the upper right
  2. Pick the Design tab
  3. At the bottom buttons labeled Change Design color
  4. Five Color Boxes labeled Background, text, links, sidebar, sidebar border
  5. Important no matter what background to make this readable
  6. Colors matter
  7. Sidebar is where your profile is located and the text needs to be readable if you want anyone to read it. I have to highlight so many bios because they are unreadable.
  8. Links leave at blue
  9. Background color can be a solid color and uncomplicated. If you chose instead an image beware – Background pick a color that will blend with anything else you pick so that if their screen size is larger than the image you upload it blends well.

- Background Theme and sidebar

  1. Pick one of customized theme by clicking on it
  2. Change sidebar color if you want
  3. Choices can be changed later

- Background Image and sidebar

  1. Image size matters because screen sizes are different
  2. Pick a large image where the sides would be cut off on a small screen
  3. Remember the middle of the screen is covered too so finding the right image where both the middle and sides might be gone is the trick here.
  4. Pick a small image and let it tile (use gimp or photo imaging software to change the image size)
  5. Pick a medium image that the background color will work for larger screens
  6. Upload the images and change your screen size to see what it looks like
  7. Images cannot be more than 800k to upload them
  8. Image size choices
  • 1024 x 768
  • 1280 x 800
  • 1280 x 1024
  • 1440 x 900
  • 1680 x 1050
