Twitter Social Media Networking Tutorial Begin1

Twitter is fast becoming a quick and easy way to build community. Sharing with others if a movie is good. Getting news to others about disasters and whether you are safe has been making the news a lot lately during the many disasters. Also, uprising and other coordinator effort is finding traction because of the ability to communicate with so many. Targeted postings are done by using a hashtag #earthquake so others can search on the same hashtag and find others reports.

We are going to do this on your computer to begin.

Sometimes it is best to jump in and learn as you go. Looking for all the useful ways to use twitter will help you learn the tool. Reading a book or searching online will give you more. For many it is too much, too fast by just reading. For me and most people I have taught computers and applications requires hands on the computer in order to really learn.

  1. Go to twitter – click this link http://twitter.com/
    • Screens (Interfaces) change constantly so learning the concepts or main areas lets you learn to look for those topics or tabs or links on the page.
    • Showing a bunch of screen shots will not help.
    • We can help each other in the comments. Don’t let the changes these applications make to their screen bog you down.
  2. Be adventurous.
  3. Look for a button or link for Join or Signup
  4. Username – pick something easy to identify you and SHORT because you only have 140 characters to talk.
  5. email – you may want a gmail account for all your online correspondence and then forward to your email. For now use what you have and you can change it later.
  6. Captcha – these are to make sure you are not a machine, if you can’t read it, use the refresh symbol or button to get a different one
  7. Create your account
    • Your new account now has a url (uniform resource location) webpage address  – http://twitter.com/yourusername
    • Some call it a handle
    • Example mine http://twitter.com/eileenludwig
    • Meeting In Real Life IRL people will call you by your handle or a job.
    • Be conscious about what your pick
  8. First tweet. Pick something you are interested in. Photo, cats, food, travel.
  9. Type in a short message – Looking for people to connect with who are interested in #travel
    • #travel is a hashtag plus the word travel which allows others to search for travel and see your tweet
    • Many ways to find others with your interests
      • Use a word in the search box (on right halfway down with a magnifier. Move your pointer over the symbol and a tool tip pops up Search
      • http://search.twitter.com/
    • Search by their email
  10. Now play by looking for other people you know or with your interest
  11. Tabs across the top
    • Visit each one to see what is there. Change if you want
    • Pick a simple design to start for now. Later create your own.
  12. Trending. Scroll down. Lower right side topics. People in Japan used several hashtags (#japan) during earthquake to communicate from their phones.
    • Yes, phones – that is another topic and device.
    • watch this space to see serious and silly subjects
  13. Get comfortable.
    • Learn the shorten lingo
    • 2 = to
    • 4 = for
    • great = gr8
    • lol = laughing out loud or just laughing
    • omg = oh my gosh
    • shortening words is so they fit in the 140 characters
    • Some use tools for shortening links (covered later)
      • some will never click on shorten links
      • shorten links can lead to spam sites

Creating a new account

Using freelancetouris name from my travel site. They cut off the last t with a limit of 15 characters. Arrgh. This is allowing me to see what you see. Looks like I have a big blank for Home without following anyone. Find people to follow by your interests I like the #hashtag search
